Root canal treatment simplified

Root canal treatment removes infected tissue (dental pulp) within a tooth.
Dental pulp can become infected if severe decay or an injury creates a cavity.
Harmful bacteria can then enter the cavity and destroy the pulp inside the tooth.
Without treatment, your tooth is likely to fail and need an extraction.
Your dentist will disinfect the tooth.
A bespoke and natural-looking crown is made to support and protect your tooth.

Benefits of root canal treatment

We use the latest digital imaging and microscopic loupes to determine whether a root canal is needed. We will present you with tangible visuals of why treatment is needed so that you can make an informed decision about the future of your oral health. We always want our patients to understand their oral hygiene status so they can feel confident in their decisions going forward. The benefits of treatment include:

You may need a root canal if you experience the following symptoms:

Your treatment journey

Step 1: Examination – We will make a full examination of your mouth to identify how damaged your tooth has become. Digital X-rays will tell us exactly what’s happening inside your mouth.
Step 2: Clearing the infection – The infection is cleared under local anaesthetic. We use the most up-to-date, comfort-oriented rubber dam techniques to minimise complications during and after the procedure, resulting in highly successful long-term outcomes. We use minimally invasive methods to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible whilst removing all infected matter, without compromising the structure of neighbouring teeth.
Step 3: Restoring your tooth – Comfortable digital impressions of your teeth are taken to create a bespoke restorative and aesthetic crown that protects your tooth. We use biocompatible materials that mimic the mechanics and aesthetics of a real tooth.

FAQs

How long does a root canal take?

Clearing the infection can take between 60 and 90 minutes. The number of appointments needed depends on the complexity of the case. If there is more than one infection present, we may need to see you for 2-3+ appointments to resolve it fully.

We use digital systems to reduce chair time wherever possible without compromising the quality of your treatment. Once we have made a full examination of your teeth, we can give you an accurate projection of how many appointments to expect, and an accurate step-by-step, fully costed treatment plan.

Will my tooth look and feel normal after root canal treatment?

Once the infection has been cleared, you will be able to chew naturally and practice at-home oral care without pain or complications again.

Your tooth will also look aesthetically restored, as we use tooth-coloured materials to match the crown to your existing tooth shade.

Mr Patel has been my dentist for over 40 years, since I was a teenager. And I still have all my own teeth! In fact, I haven't needed any work doing other than my regular 6-monthly clean and polish, since I was about 15. So, he certainly doesn't do any work unnecessarily! It's a lovely practice, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Abington Park Dental looked after my teeth for a number of years. It’s a nice tidy dental practice, however sadly they can no longer cater for me as NHS patient as I’ve not been in over 2 years and could only offer me services as a private patient. I'm currently in the process of having extensive treatment works, and I can see a huge improvement in my teeth already. The reception are friendly and do their best to accommodate appointments and payments. The dentist and support team are very informative and as gentle as can be, every step of the way. The quality of their work is exemplary.After previously having work done through the NHS at another dentist and then going private, I'm never going back... You only get one set of natural adult teeth, so it's a no brainer to get the best care that you can. Outstanding. I did not understand why going private is better, but it is, or at least this dentistry is superb.People are shocked at work when asked did my root canal hurt, and I reply I nearly feel asleep to the calm music whilst in chair.This is from a man who had a phobia of the dentist and avoided for many years. Thank you for the confidence you have put in me with dentists. It's more expensive than NHS, but I will have to work harder, save, or pay in instalments.Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
